Asset Distribution
Your will directs how property held in your name passes to named beneficiaries rather than according to state law. You decide the shares, the timing, and any conditions.

Guardianship for Minor Children
Colorado law allows parents to name a guardian for minor children only through a will. A trust can’t accomplish this. For parents with young children, this provision alone is reason enough to have the document drafted properly.

Executor Designation
Naming an executor gives your estate a clear administrator from the start. That person can file the will with the Denver Probate Court and carry out its instructions, reducing both delay and conflict.

Contingency Provisions

Colorado’s Requirements & the Risk of DIY Wills

Colorado gives you two valid ways to execute a will. You can sign in the presence of two witnesses, who must also sign, or you can acknowledge the will before a notary public with no witnesses required. Either method produces a legally valid document. Adding a notarized self-proving affidavit is optional, but it can simplify probate by allowing the court to accept the will without tracking down witnesses.

Online will templates are widely available. The risk is that an ambiguously worded provision, a missed signature, or a clause that doesn’t match Colorado’s current requirements can render a bequest unenforceable or invite a family dispute.
