Some ways to lower the costs of a divorce

Regardless of age or income level, a divorce can be hard on the emotions and the finances of Colorado couples who are going through the process. But, with a little preparation and a few best practices, it is possible to minimize the damage to both.

If both parties are familiar with their marital assets and can treat each other in a reasonable, fair and honest manner, the high legal fees and lengthy court battles associated with contentious divorces can often be avoided. An amicable end of a marriage can be finalized for far less in legal fees and costs than those commonly associated with contentious cases. It can also be done in a few weeks instead of dragging on for a much longer period of time.

Many couples ratchet up their legal fees in a divorce by using their lawyers to fight about minor parenting issues or financial details. In many cases, it may be far more economical to give in to a minor point than to try and fight it in the courtroom. Mediation can be another less-expensive option for trying to amicably negotiate a divorce settlement that is fair to both parties, but only when both parties are fully informed about the state of their finances and other aspects of their marriage.

When it is time to see a lawyer and file for divorce, it can help to stay focused on the goal of getting the marriage dissolved with as little emotional and financial cost as possible. Clients who let their emotions run away with them can end up sidetracked by unimportant details that loom large in their mind's eye. This can end up being far more expensive than is warranted.
