Pilar Sanders loses custody, child support payments

Coming to agreement on child custody can be one of the most contentious parts of a divorce. Colorado parents may have differing ideas as to what custody arrangements would serve the best interests of their children. If they cannot come to an agreement through negotiation, it could be up to the judge handling the divorce case to determine child custody arrangements.

Sometimes the arrangements may be of a temporary nature. These may change during divorce proceedings based on the evidence provided to the court. This was the case with the temporary custody arrangement previously enjoyed by Pilar Sanders, the estranged wife of former NFL great Deion Sanders.

Pilar Sanders, who was previously awarded temporary custody of the couple's two sons, officially lost that custody on Dec. 19. The two boys haven't lived with their mother since Oct. 26. Along with the loss of custody, Pilar Sanders also had the amount of child support she was receiving lowered from $10,500 a month to $5,500. She retains custody of the couple's daughter, with whom Deion has visitation rights.

According to a publicist for Pilar Sanders, the recent custody change is largely because of Deion's celebrity status. The publicist believes that the football player is receiving preferential treatment from the courts because of his fame. Of course, it must be noted that Pilar Sanders is not devoid of celebrity status herself as a former model and actress.

Child custody agreements are based on what is deemed to be in the best interests of the child. During a divorce, Colorado residents have a right to go to court to present evidence that they believe will support their arguments of just what those best interests may be. Even after a divorce or after custody has been settled, a noncustodial parent has the right to return to court if circumstances have changed to put forth new evidence to seek a modification of an existing custody agreement.
