Deciding matters of custody in Colorado can be very difficult. Each parent may have different ideas about what is best for his or her child and coming to an agreement may seem impossible. Therefore, courts must sometimes intervene when it comes to determining who will be responsible for making decisions that impact the child’s life.
A man from Colorado has learned firsthand just how harrowing some custody battles can be. Over nine years ago, he learned he was going a father. The child’s mother wished to give the baby up for adoption after it was born but the father expressed his desire to raise the child. Late in her pregnancy, the mother traveled to Utah from Colorado, where the baby ended up being born.
A few days later, the biological mother consented in court in Utah to the adoption of the baby girl to her brother and his wife. Meanwhile, the father had not even been alerted to the fact of the birth, much less that the baby had been given up for adoption. His name was not included on the girl’s birth certificate.
After years of legal battles spanning multiple jurisdictions, a court in Colorado has now granted the father parental rights for his daughter. He currently lives in New Mexico and has consented to the girl continuing to be cared for by her uncle and aunt in Utah so that she would not have to switch schools.
Custody battles can be lengthy and fraught with emotion. People who are dealing with issues involving the custody of a child may wish to contact an experienced attorney.
