How can I protect my child from being harmed by my divorce?

If you are worried about how your Denver divorce will affect your children, you are far from alone. According to Scientific American, there are 1.5 million children across the country that have to deal with their parents’ divorce every year. While the separation of a child’s parents is rarely easy for them to deal with, there are some things you can do to soften the impact of your divorce on them.

One of the best ways to make sure your children are emotionally healthy after the divorce is for you to take good care of yourself by being in good health and being dependable. In addition, communicating with your children openly and remaining involved in their lives and activities will go a long way toward keeping their environmental as stable as possible.

Conflict and drama with your ex should also be avoided as much as possible as it has been found that when parents clash with each other during and after the divorce, children may not adjust as well. This may especially be true if you and your spouse tried to hide your conflicts from your children while you were married because the divorce may then seem a total surprise to them. However, it was also found that if the couple was highly contentious before the divorce, the children may actually adjust better post-separation.

The good news is that research seems to indicate that most children of divorce grow up to be well-adjusted adults. While the initial blow of the divorce may lead to some short term negative consequences, the majority of children will move past that after a few years.
