Date set for Kim Kardashian's divorce from Kris Humphries

Divorce is one of the most difficult life changes anyone can experience. But matters such as a contested prenuptial agreement, the determination of spousal support and accusations of misconduct can further complicate the end of a marriage. Along those lines, basketball star Kris Humphries has accused wife Kim Kardashian of committing fraud and believes their marriage should be annulled, but a judge has set a divorce trial for May 6.

The couple had been married for only 72 days when Kardashian filed for divorce in October 2011. Humphries claims that Kardashian married him to improve her reality TV ratings. She denied the accusations and pushed for divorce. Kardashian hopes the divorce will go through before she gives birth to her baby with Kanye West. The trial will likely last three to five days.

Humphries' attorney requested that the trial be delayed until the conclusion of the basketball season, but the judge denied the request. The attorney hopes to find proof of fraud in 13,000 hours of footage from "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and other reality shows starring Kardashian, but he does not have an agreement to get the footage.

This particular trial is not set to take place in Colorado, but high-asset citizens throughout our state are facing similar issues in their own divorces.

Of course, every divorce case is unique and affects the course of the lives of everyone involved. People involved in contentious marital split need to be fully aware of the available options of avoiding high court costs or going to trial. The best way to protect your future is to understand how divorce laws in Colorado apply to your particular case.
