Are children of divorced parents more likely to be overweight?

If you are a Colorado parent who is divorced from your child’s other parent, you may have many worries when it comes your child’s well-being. There is sometimes a lot of focus on the emotional aspects that children face when dealing with their parents’ divorce, but not as much thought may be put into what kind of physical shape a child may be in. This could be problematic, as one study that was conducted in Norway found that children whose parents divorce may in fact weigh more than their peers whose parents stay together reports Live Science.

The study looked at more than 3,000 children and compared their physical stats to their parents’ marital status. The study did not take into account how recent the parents’ divorce was. All of the children were in third grade and were eight or nine years old.

This problem could strike your child particularly hard if he is a boy. While both boys and girls are more likely to be overweight if their parents are divorced, boys were 104 percent more likely to have excess weight around their midsection and 63 percent more likely to weigh too much overall.

Childhood obesity is a concerning problem in many parts of the world as it can lead to health problems later in life such as heart disease and diabetes. However, the study stopped short of saying that their parents split caused children to gain weight. Possible reasons for the weight gain after divorce include psychological stress, tighter finances and lack of time for meal preparation.
